About Us
The building was constructed in 1991 as a replacement for the original Painter Store, owned and operated by Garnett Cary, which burned in the Yellowstone Fires of 1988. Garnett was 95 years old when we, the Painter Posse purchased this property from her in April of 2004. She operated the restaurant (known as the Cary Inn) and the Painter Store until 2002, when she closed the doors. Garnett will be 97 years old in June, 2006. She lives next door, and is the embodiment of an independent, well educated, and delightfully feisty, mountain woman.
The Painter Posse consists of Lee Mackler, and Carol & Richard Lunger. Carol & Lee are sister and brother, raised in Newcastle, Wyoming, where their grandparents homesteaded, near the Black Hills. Lee has spent most of his life in Casper in his owner-operated business selling truck toppers and accessories. Carol went to nursing school in Billings, Montana, and has lived in New Jersey with Richard (now, a retired emergency-department physician) for the past 25 years.
Carol & Richard have been visiting annually since the early 1980's, bringing their 5 children to Sunlight Basin, where Carol's relatives have a home. In 2002, they bought a home in Sunlight with the idea of spending much of their retirement years in Wyoming. After discovering in October, 2003, that the Painter property was for sale, the Posse members decided to make a major change in lifestyle, and assumed the challenge of operating the Painter Outpost and the Clark's Fork & Spoon Restaurant.
Welcome to our 25 acres of paradise!
